News about car toll in Austria
With the new vignette year 2024, there are some changes in the Austrian car tolling system. Here is a summary of the most important points for you at a glance:
Digital section toll
All digital section toll products are valid immediately.
The digital section toll FLEX
We have significantly improved the FLEX service: with the FLEX service, you will pay no more than the price of a multi-trip card within a year (per section toll segment, 365 days from the first passage).
Benefits for you:
- Spontaneously change your travel plans – flexible use of all sections
- Cheapest option for frequent travellers
The multi-trip card
replaces the previous annual section toll card. It is valid for 365 days from the date of issue for a specific section toll segment and is tied to a vehicle license plate number.
Your benefit:
- Thanks to better pricing, it is no longer necessary to credit the annual vignette.
We recommend that customers use the service digital section toll FLEX after their multi-trip card expires.
Digital vignette
If you wish, you can buy the digital 1-day and 10-day vignette with immediate validity.
The 1-day vignette
is valid for one calendar day and allows immediate use of the Austrian motorway and expressway network.

The 1-day vignette is only available digitally from the ASFINAG toll shop and our sales partners.
Vignette or GO-Box?
Previously, the maximum permissible weight (MPW) was used to determine whether the car toll had to be paid by means of a vignette or the HGV toll by means of a GO-Box.
Since 01.12.2023, the maximum technically permissible laden mass will be used for this purpose. However, the limit value of 3.5 t remains the same!
Please note:
- vehicles up to and including 3.5 t (maximum technically permissible laden mass) must have a vignette as before,
- Transition period: Vehicles over 3.5 t (maximum technically permissible laden mass) with first registration before 1 December 2023, for which the maximum permissible total weight was also set at no more than 3.5 t before 1 December 2023, are subject to the vignette and section toll obligation until 31 January 2029.,
- vehicles over 3.5 t (maximum technically permissible laden mass) that were first registered from 1.12.2023 must have a GO-Box.
